Riverstone is one of the first striped corns to join our collection. She has been an excellent feeder, a steady grower, and extremely docile since the day we brought her home. Her mate for this year, Hematite, has a similar feeding response and an almost identical personality - only he is slightly mellower than River. Their matching personalities and avid appetites were the main reasons behind putting this pair together as we hope that the majority of the offspring will inherit both traits from their parents.

This pairing was confirmed for the 2008 breeding season, first hook-up occurred on 02-24-08 and the second on 03-04-08. We paired them up twice to increase the likelihood of a fertile clutch. River had laid a total of 16 fertile eggs on 05-04-08, projected hatch date was originally around 07-08-08.

River's eggs did not start pipping until 07-29-08, day 86 of incubation. This is far from normal, though the extra few weeks of incubation didn't appear to affect the health of the hatchlings. Of the 16 eggs laid back on 05-04-08, one went bad during incubation and the other 15 went on to hatch out over a 4-5 day period. One hatchling, an Anery female, died shortly after leaving the egg, cause unknown and the final snow was humanely euthanized after discovering that it was severely deformed down around the tail with several coils fused together as well as appearing to have a collapsed lung. The other 13 hatchlings are doing just fine though, turning blue as they prepare to go through their first shed.
